นี่คืออัลบั้มที่แฟนเพลง The Beatles ถือว่าเป็นอัลบั้มที่ The Beatles ทำงานร่วมกันในสตูดิโอ "อัลบั้มสุดท้าย"
แม้จะมีอัลบั้ม Let it be ตามออกมาเป็นอัลบั้มสุดท้ายหากนับตามเวลาก็ตาม
พูดกันจริง ๆ ก็คือ ภายหลังการขึ้นสู่จุดสูงสุดในอัลบั้ม Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band แล้ว
The Beatles ก็เหมือนถึงจุดอิ่มตัว และเริ่มเบื่อหน่ายการเข้าห้องอัดและออกทัวร์ รวมทั้งเบื่อหน้ากันเองด้วยปัจจัยต่าง ๆ
หลังจากพวกเขา ทำอัลบั้ม Magical Mystery Tour
อัลบั้มหลังจากนั้น ก็ไม่เชิงว่า เป็นอัลบั้มใหม่ในสตูดิโอเต็มร้อยเปอร์เซ็นต์
เพราะเป็นการนำเพลงเหลือจากอัลบั้มชุดก่อน ๆ มาใส่ลงบ้าง เป็นอัลบั้มซาวด์แทรกประกอบภาพบนตร์บ้าง
สมาชิกแกนหลักสองคน คือ John Lennon และ Paul McCartney ได้ปรึกษากันว่า
อยากลองวัดความรู้สึกของวง โดยการกลับมาทำอัลบั้มในสตูดิโอเต็มรูปแบบอีกสักครั้ง
ผลก็คือ หลังจากทำอัลบั้ม Abbey Road ทุกคนก็รู้ว่า เส้นทาง The Beatles คงไม่สามารถ "ทน" ทอดยาวต่อไปอีกได้
จึงประกาศ "ยุบวง" อย่างเป็นทางการ แต่ก็ไม่ได้ช็อกความรู้สึกแฟนเพลงสักเท่าไหร่
เพราะช่วงเวลาที่ผ่านมา ทุกคนก็พอจะรู้แล้วว่า The Beatles ไม่แตกก็เหมือนแตก ต่างคนต่างไป กันมาก่อนแล้ว

มีบางสำนักเหมือนกัน ที่บอกว่ามี 14 อัลบั้ม
คือ นับอัลบั้มรวมเพลงฮิต A Collection Of Beatles Oldies (But Goldies) เข้าไปด้วย
แต่ส่วนใหญ่ จะไม่นับ รวมทั้งเวบไซต์อย่างเป็นทางการของ The Beatles ก็ไม่นับอัลบั้มนี้
ผมจึงขอยึดถือ ตามหลักใหญ่ ก็แล้วกัน
พูดถึง การนำเพลงฮิตมารวมเป็นอัลบั้มวางจำหน่ายใหม่ของ The Beatles
ถ้าไม่นับ การวางจำหน่ายในฝั่งอเมริกา ที่ไปจัดเพลง ตั้งชื่ออัลบั้มใหม่
ต้องถือว่า The Beatles ออกอัลบั้มรวมฮิต (ขณะที่ยังไม่แยกวง) เพียงอัลบั้มนี้อัลบั้มเดียวครับ
นอกเหนือจากนั้น ก็ไม่ถือว่าเป็นอัลบั้ม เพราะจะเป็น single ไม่กี่เพลง
ซึ่งมักจะออกวางขาย ในช่วงคริสต์มาส ซึ่งถือเป็นช่วง "ทำเงิน"
โดยมีที่มาจาก Brian Epstein ผู้จัดการวง อยากรวบรวมเพลงจากอัลบั้มต่าง ๆ มาวางขายในช่วงคริสต์มาสนี่แหละ
ก็เลยออกมาเป็น A Collection Of Beatles Oldies (But Goldies)
ออกวางจำหน่ายในวันที่ 10 ธค. 1966
แต่ปรากฏว่า A Collection Of Beatles Oldies (But Goldies) กลายเป็นอัลบั้ม "หน้าแตก" อัลบั้มเดียวของ The Beatles ไปเลย
เพราะหากนับว่าเป็นอัลบั้ม (บรรจุเพลงเต็มแผ่นใหญ่) ก็เป็นอัลบั้มเดียวของ The Beatles ที่ไม่สามารถทำยอดขายขึ้นเป็นอันดับ 1 ได้
สาเหตุนั้น มีหลายประการ กล่าวคือ
- อาจเป็นเพราะแฟนเพลง อยากเห็น The Beatles สร้างสรรค์บทเพลงใหม่ไปเรื่อย ๆ ก็เป็นได้ จึงไม่ค่อย "ตื่นเต้น" กับเพลงเก่าที่เอามาขายใหม่ ยอดขายจึงไม่พุ่งสูง
- อัลบั้มนี้ ออกหลังอัลบั้ม Revolver ไม่นานนัก ยอดขาย Revolver กำลังวิ่งอยู่ เมื่อออกอัลบั้มใหม่มาซ้อน ก็เหมือนมาแย่ง-แบ่งการตลาดกันเอง
- ในช่วงเวลานั้น ทั่วโลกกำลังตกอยู่ในกระแสหนัง The Sound of Music ฟีเวอร์ อาจเป็นโชคร้ายที่ The Beatles เข็นอัลบั้มรวมฮิต ออกมาชนกับซาวด์แทร็ก The Sound of Music อันลือลั่น ก็เป็นได้
